Simon is the brains behind EJ Legal! He set up the Company in 1992 when legal recruitment was still in its infancy. The ethos behind the Company was to provide lawyers with strategic recruitment advice and career planning. Since then he has led the development of the company into the leading agency for partner recruitment. Simon now specialises in senior recruitment and has placed partners and teams into virtually every top London firm. Simon sits in the best seat in the EJ Legal office from which he indulges his hobby of birdwatching. Everyone in the office is waiting for the day when he offers to make the tea and coffee.

Dr Sarah King taught at university level for several years, then qualified as a lawyer and spent five years at City firm Gouldens where she specialised in commercial property. She became increasingly involved in the firm's graduate recruitment programme and in 1996 joined EJ Legal. She became a director of the Company in 1997 and now specialises in partnership recruitment in London. She has been involved in many of the highest profile lateral and team hires of partners in private practice in recent years. Recently Sarah, who has researched the issues of recruitment and retention in law firms and the impact of corporate cultures on fee earners, has been asked by a number of City partnerships to address them. Sarah has just hit middle-age and is still trying to adjust to a life of being older than many of her partner candidates and existing without Westlife and Bacardi Breezers..

Emma Rothwell

Emma grew up in Jersey and stayed close to home when she studied psychology at university. On graduating she was desperate to escape to see the big wide world and set off to travel for six months. Emma spent the next four years in Australia- not all of it on a beach. It was during her stay in Sydney that Emma first planned a career in recruitment and went onto to work in two of the leading agencies there. Emma has always believed that a good recruiter should never just act as a conduit passing cvs from candidate to client and spends a great deal of time with the solicitors with whom she works really getting to know them and thus the kind of culture and environment in which they would thrive. Emma has played the piano since the age of 5 and can often be found tinkling the ivories at EJ get togethers. Her performances tend to improve as the evening progresses, enhanced by Emma's addiction to flaming sambuccas.

Having studied English, Media and Law at college George decided to extend his education by taking a degree in cultural studies. Ever diligent he decided to experience different cultures in preparation and spent several years jetting off round the globe to as many far flung corners of the world as possible. Finally coming down to earth with a bump George decided it was time to settle down and, after a couple of years management experience, began his career recruiting into investment banks, international accountancy and law firms. He now specialises in partner placements into London law firms, often using his extensive knowledge of the tax and financial services markets in working with his candidates. George spends his free time basking in the crisp sea air of the South Coast. He is known as EJ's intellectual, happily spending hours contemplating the dichotomy of spirituality and capitalism while reading Spot the Dog books and playing with diggers, all of which he claims is entirely for the benefit of his young son.

Having been to school in both South Africa and England Sean went to university to study Psychology to see if he could work out what makes people tick (The EJ office is waiting with baited breath for his verdict on that one!) Sean then spent a couple of years in finance recruitment before joining EJ group to focus on working with lawyers. Sean has a very down to earth approach to recruitment believing it is always best to give practical and honest advice about career options. He is known for his never-ending patience with candidates and clients alike combined with a straight-talking approach, delivered in the politest possible way (he says that's his South African roots!). Sean 's great love is travel to exotic places hosting a variety of wildlife and sights. Needless to say he is a huge football fan and also has a weakness for chocolate milkshakes which he indulges on a daily basis.

Peter originally graduated in Scots law (LLB) before converting to English law and qualifying as a barrister in 2001. After time spent with Bird & Bird, he qualified as a solicitor in 2004 with Boyes Turner before moving to Shoosmiths in February 2006 where he specialised in commercial and IT law. Deciding that he was done with the law, he decided to give recruitment a try and joined Hudson as a legal recruiter. After almost 3 years with them, he decided to join leading competitors EJ Legal where he currently works in the London private practice team specialising in recruiting assistants and partners in the permanent market.

Jon Kennedy studied modern languages at the University of Warwick and set off to teach English overseas . After three years of sunshine in Italy and Greece the lure of London’s wet streets became too strong and in 2006 Jon returned home and began his career in legal recruitment. When he joined EJ Legal in 2011 he was already acknowledged by his client firms as one of the most reliable practice recruiters in the City. Jon believes in providing a low volume, high quality service and that he should always go the extra mile to add value rather than simply act as a middleman passing CVs from candidate to client. Jon is a keen sportsman and is hoping his ageing body allows him to play football for a few more years.

Karen Martell

Karen trained and qualified as an employment solicitor with Olswang. After talking to a number of agencies she was impressed by EJ's specialised, professional and focused approach. She applies the same level of commitment to her candidates' job searches as she did to her matters in private practice and prides herself particularly on listening carefully and understanding an individual's needs. It is this approach which has made Karen so successful at finding her candidates their perfect role and why they consider her input to be invaluable. Karen is addicted to shoes and is currently negotiating for extra office space to accommodate her ever growing collection. She is on a constant mission to get fit and, although she has yet to join the gym, she has taken the all important first step of buying a new pair of trainers.

Simon Morley

Simon read English at the University of Hull and, having grown up in a family of solicitors, decided he was going to do anything but become a lawyer… But a conversion course at Nottingham later Simon became fascinated (temporarily) by the intricacies of property law and became a Partner in 2001. Gradually the excitement generated by the LPA began to diminish for Simon and by 2010 he had joined EJ Group to specialise in partner recruitment.

Simon is acutely aware of, both from his own experience and those of his many former colleagues and friends, the problems, perils and pluses of transferring your practice at partner level. He tries always to provide very practical advice to his senior candidates and encourages them to 'think outside the box' about their career options.

Simon claims that his interests include fine wine, football, cricket and travel - but most of his EJ colleagues think that watching a cricket match (preferably England winning the Ashes) whilst sitting in a pub would be his ideal way of passing a weekend!

Claire Cavanagh

Claire trained as a lawyer but, when she began applying for roles, was horrified at how little attention the recruitment professionals she approached actually paid to her key requisites in a job. She soon moved into recruitment herself and now prides herself on really getting to know a candidate's aspirations and motivations before suggesting any positions to them. Claire is well known in the EJ office for a never ending stream of calls from candidates she has placed who want to stay in touch with her. She is now one of the leading recruiters of solicitors in London. Claire is the proud Mum of a three year old daughter. Motherhood has meant that she has had to swop her old pastimes of shoe shopping and manicures for the more sedate hobbies of story-telling and cooking. She is, however, still very partial to a dry white wine and manages to lead the way on the EJ Girls' nights out!
