Equality, Diversity and Inclusion

Creating opportunity in law

The legal profession is at its best when talented people have the opportunity to succeed, regardless of their background.

Since 1992, we have seen the profession evolve. We also know that inequalities remain in who enters the profession, who progresses and who reaches its most senior levels.

Recruiters have a responsibility to help change that.

For us, Equity, Diversity and Inclusion (ED&I) is more than a statement. It shapes how we recruit, the advice we give, the candidates we represent and how we work with clients to broaden access to opportunity.

A more inclusive approach to recruitment

Our objective is to identify the strongest talent while helping to ensure that exceptional talent is not overlooked because of their background or circumstances.

Across our work with law firms and in-house legal teams, we:

  • Encourage clients to consider the widest possible pool of talent;

  • Challenge unnecessarily restrictive recruitment criteria where appropriate;

  • Support fair and inclusive recruitment processes;

  • Help candidates navigate barriers to entering and progressing within the legal profession; and

  • Use our market knowledge to contribute to informed conversations about representation and opportunity in law.

Diversity is complex. Gender, ethnicity, disability, neurodiversity, sexual orientation and socio-economic background can all influence a person's experience of education, recruitment and the workplace.

Those factors also intersect. A person's experience cannot always be understood by considering one characteristic in isolation.

Our sister company Dandi

Making Social Mobility Matter

Our commitment to widening opportunity extends beyond traditional recruitment.

EJ Legal is the sister company of Dandi, a specialist social mobility and contextual recruitment business created to help employers identify talent from a broader range of backgrounds.

Dandi combines contextual recruitment technology, targeted recruitment and diversity-focused campaigns to help organisations turn their ED&I ambitions into practical action.

At the heart of its offering is Dandi's Diversity Lens, a contextual recruitment tool that helps employers understand a candidate's academic achievements in the context in which they were achieved. Rather than looking at grades and qualifications in isolation, contextual recruitment recognises that candidates may have faced very different circumstances and opportunities along the way.

Dandi helps employers to identify and understand socio-economic disadvantage, widen access to opportunities, measure the social mobility of their recruitment pipelines and reach talent from underrepresented backgrounds.

Working particularly closely with the UK legal profession, Dandi's wider objective is simple:

" Where somebody starts in life shouldn't determine where they finish "
